Sir Roger, in addition to his athletic achievements, is an eminent neurologist. Now retired from clinical practice, he performed some of the pioneering work on MSA. His expertise and continued interest in, and support of, the Trust have been invaluable.
Professor Mathias is Professor of Neurovascular Medicine at the University of London, a chair held jointly between Imperial College London and the Institute of Neurology, University College London. He directs the two largest clinical autonomic units in the country, at St Mary's Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, both in London. Both units are national and international referral centres for a range of autonomic disorders including MSA, and he and his teams are recognised as leaders in the field of autonomic research and its implementation in clinical practice. Professor Mathias and Sir Roger Bannister co-edit a major textbook on autonomic failure (Autonomic Failure: A Textbook of Clinical Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System, 4th Edition. Oxford University Press, 2002). It is the leading medical source of comprehensive information on the diagnosis and management of autonomic dysfunction in MSA and a variety of autonomic disorders.
