For professionals

The SMT was established to support and inform not only people with MSA and their families, but also the multidisciplinary teams of health and social care professionals who are involved in their everyday lives. MSA is a complex, unpredictable and uncommon neurological disorder that many professionals will not have encountered before. We hope the information on this site will help you plan and implement the care and support your patient requires.

The specialist nurses are happy to answer any queries by telephone or in writing, so please do contact us for more general information or to discuss your patient’s specific problems.

The SMT produces information booklets on MSA as well as a range of factsheets on symptom management see the MSA guide, FAQ and Managing symptoms. A 3-fold information leaflet suitable for outpatient displays, or distributing to newly diagnosed patients, is available free of charge from the SMT office; please contact us to request a supply. We also have a Reference List of medical journal articles relating to the diagnosis and management of MSA – please contact the SMT office for a copy of the latest list.

The SMT holds a number of MSA Awareness Days around the UK every year - the morning session is an introduction/update on MSA for professionals and these free sessions are open to all professionals in the area, limited only by venue capacity. The afternoon session is a support meeting for patients and their families.

If you would be interested in hosting an Awareness Day at your hospital or centre the please contact the nurses to discuss dates.

In addition to our support and information services the SMT also runs a Communication Aids loan scheme accessible to Speech and Language Therapists for their clients with MSA and a Welfare Gift Scheme to help towards the costs of equipment and services. Please write to the nurses to request either of these.
